Timothy is currently pursuing a PhD in Marine Biology at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography under Dr. Octavio Aburto. His research involves using a suite of acoustic technologies to characterize fish spawning aggregations in the Gulf of California with an end goal of enhancing information available to stakeholders, resource managers, and conservationists. The majority of his work is centered on understanding fish sound production and how this naturally occurring behavior can be used by researchers and managers to assess and monitor different life stages of commercially important fish species.

He is currently developing passive and active acoustic methods to conduct stock assessments at a commercially important spawning aggregation of Gulf Corvina (Cynoscion othonopterus) in the northern Gulf of California. Through partnerships with other colleagues, fishermen, and the Gulf of California Marine Program, he has begun to develop a model to predict Gulf Corvina density and abundance from in-situ sound production. Timothy also works with Gulf Grouper (Mycteroperca jordani) in the southern Gulf of California, where he uses acoustic telemetry and passive acoustic methods to monitor patterns of residency, movement, and spawning in Cabo Pulmo National Park. As Gulf Grouper is currently listed as endangered by the IUCN due to profound population declines and a lack of knowledge of the species’ basic life history, Timothy’s work will move our understanding of this suppressed species forward and provide useful information for future restoration strategies. In coordination with other members of the Aburto Lab, he contributes to a new initiative (FisheriesNET) to develop and deploy solar powered GPS trackers on fleets of small scale fishing vessels in Mexico.
