Astrid Hsu

"I am interested in bridging the divide between science and the general public through communication and education. "

Astrid specializes in ocean education and outreach and co-manages these components of the Aburto lab. When she first began at the lab in 2013, she focused on otolith analysis and growth models of the Gulf corvina. Now, she coordinates the communication and education components of the lab. Her main focus is PINboat, a citizen science effort to track the world’s marine traffic. She also works with UCOP and SIO's Dr. Ramanathan to coordinate a course on climate solutions. Astrid got both her B.S. of Marine Biology (with a minor in Science Education) and her M.A.S. of Marine Biodiversity and Conservation at UCSD where she investigated the relationships between literature and people within an aquarium setting. She continues to explore how to influence conservation and ocean literacy through interdisciplinary methods.
